Have you been to Gorizia before?
Yes, well, actually no: to be fair I’ve been to Nova Gorica, but I basically lived inside the theatre.
What’s the first thing you want to see or do?
I’d like to take advantage of this opportunity to realize where I really am, to live like a local.
What awaits you after Visavì?
We are presenting Inferno at Romaeuropa Festival a couple of days later, on 12th November, after which we’ll head to Montpellier.
You have the power to do one thing to change the world of dance: what is it?
I’d remove the word “dance” from the vocabulary! Not to destroy it, but to make it thrive: the sim-ple fact that dance is perceived as something different from the theatre is detrimental. Dance is a form of theatre, a theatre without words.
If you could give one piece of advice to yourself as a child, what would it be?
I don’t know, I’ve always tried to live at my best.
And to a new dance company moving its first steps?
Think about it a zillion times. When I started, this work placed itself in a cultural context that was extremely different from the one we are experiencing today. Now, I have the feeling that the artists’ urge to dance is stronger than the audience’s need to watch it. I don't think it’s about educating the audience; it is more the relationship between supply and demand. And unfortunately, in this very moment, the ratio is unfavourable to dance.
Three words to describe what dance is to you.
There is no such thing as dance to me, only being in front of an audience and do things.
Tell me briefly what your show is about. Now convince me to come and see it :)
It’s a show where artists dance like crazy from beginning to end. On stage there are six unusual dancers, a company made up of people with different backgrounds and training, who all share a taste for dancing, not for ballet, but for being in the music, for the sake of moving. It is a show that, unlike my other works, wants to be very gratifying for the audience, who can enjoy it, smile and gain energy from it. And maybe it will even give them some food for thought.
